During this last full week of summer break, we want to remind our parents and guardians, and inform all new families, of the safety protocols we use at APISD to keep students and staff safe. APISD uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides a common language across our district and with area first responders in the event of an emergency. Over the next three days we'll be highlighting each action of the SRP.
What is the SECURE Action?
The SECURE Action is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building. SECURE uses the security of the physical facility to act as protection. During SECURE, all students and staff are brought into the secure building and all exterior doors remain locked. Classes are able to continue uninterrupted inside the building.
Examples of SECURE Conditions
The following are some examples of when a school or emergency dispatch might call for a SECURE Action.
- An unknown or unauthorized person on the grounds
- Dangerous animal on or near the grounds
- Criminal activity in the area
- Planned police activity in the neighborhood
Visit our website at apisd.org/page/safety-and-security or iloveuguys.org to learn more.

What is a HOLD Action?
The HOLD Action is used when the hallways in the school need to remain clear. Classroom learning will still take place as normal during a HOLD, but students may not be able to change classes until after the HOLD has been lifted.
Examples of HOLD Conditions
The following are some examples of when a school might initiate a HOLD:
- An altercation in a hallway;
- A medical issue that needs attention;
- Unfinished maintenance operation in a common area during class changes.

We received SO MANY wonderful, heartfelt messages! If you didn't see your nomination featured on our social media this week, don't worry, we are sending each and every message we received in a thank you note to that teacher. Thank you for supporting and recognizing our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, and every day. #teacherappreciationweek #WeAreAP

This Teacher Appreciation Week, Faulk Elementary parent Maria nominates Ms. McKinny for a shout-out: "From the first day we got the privilege to meet her, which was at Meet the Teacher, just before the school year started, she was so attentive to every child there. She made time to speak with every parent who was able to attend, with concerns of making every child feel comfortable in her class. This year was my son's first year in school - he's never been to a child care center or even been away from home without a parent. He was eager to learn & start the new year but still felt uneasy leaving home. At the beginning, I was expecting him to not want to get up in the mornings for school. It was the complete opposite. Mrs. McKinny is such a caring teacher that she was his reason for getting up every morning, excited to see her & start a new day of learning. Mrs. McKinny has never rejected or ignored any communication with parents. Even on days my son was absent, she would send a message out to check on his well being. She has the most caring & gentle heart that all her students love about her. For all these reasons & so much more we(as a family) choose Mrs. McKinny, as our Teacher of the year. Thank you Mrs. McKinny for everything you have done this year to help your students feel cared for & for expanding their little minds. " Thank you Ms. McKinny! #teacherappreciationweek #WeAreAP
